Rail Ridership Hits New High Mark in 2000:
In the
year 2000, commuter rail ridership went up by 5.2 percent, as compared to
the previous year, according to the American Public Transportation
Association. A total of 411 million rides were taken on commuter rail
trains in 2000, the highest number of trips since national commuter rail
statistics were first recorded in 1980.
Amtrak
Expands 'Quiet Car' Program to 16 More Northeast Corridor Trains:
While
riding in the Quiet Cars, guests are asked to refrain from using cell
phones, pagers and loud computer programs, or engaging in loud
conversation.
A
passenger train with more than 120 people aboard derails in Nova Scotia:
One of its cars smashes into a building by the tracks. About 20 people
hurt, five of them seriously, but none of the injuries are considered life
threatening.

Estimate for Tacoma, Wash., Seattle Rail Line Jumps by 22 Percent:
A
40-mile commuter-rail route between Tacoma and Seattle is expected to cost
$191 million more than was forecast two years ago, but Sound Transit
officials say the project will proceed as planned because they have the
money to pay for it.
A
formal decision has not been made yet to rule out the use of light-rail
trains for Opening and Closing ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics,
says the state official managing daily operations of the Utah Olympic
Public Safety Command (UOPSC).

Canadian
National Railway Co.'s US$1.2-billion purchase of Wisconsin Central
Transportation Corp. is overwhelmingly approved shareholders of the
smaller railway.
The
Greenbrier Companies (NYSE: GBX) announces a quarterly cash dividend of
$.09 per share, payable on May 16, 2001 to stockholders of record as of
April 25, 2001.
Burlington
Northern Santa Fe Railway Co. says that its earnings for the first quarter
will be below the average of analysts' expectations because of slower
demand and high fuel costs:
The average earnings forecast of analysts in a poll by First Call/Thomson
Financial was 49 cents a share, with estimates ranging from 45 cents to 52
cents. The company plans to announce earnings April 24.
Canadian
National announces that it has awarded its coveted Safe Handling Awards
for 2000 to 83 industrial facilities:
Forty-nine of these facilities are located in Canada and 34 in the United
States.
A
freight train derails, sending a locomotive into the Connecticut River and
dumping at least 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the water.
Canadian
National Railway Co. is proposing to double the speed of Canada's grain
transport system, but some farmers worry it will be done at their expense:
Paul Tellier,
president and chief executive of CN, says he wants to reduce to 11 days
from the current three weeks the time it takes to pick up a grain car on
the Prairies, deliver it to Vancouver and return it for reloading.

the acquisition of ADtranz, the railway division of the German-American
group Daimler Chrysler, by the Canadian Bombardier, subject to certain
guarantees.
Cardo
Receives Orders for Brake Equipment for Austria and Germany - Total Value
About SEK 170 Million:
These
orders cover equipment for 225 locomotives for Austria and for a total of
181 commuter trains for Germany.
A
crowded commuter train slams head on into an oncoming locomotive outside
Brussels, killing at least eight people and injuring nine in Belgium's
worst rail accident since 1974.
Municipal
transport strikes hobbled traffic in dozens of French cities this past
week, compounding the frustration for thousands of passengers already
beset by two weeks of strikes by national rail workers.
Railtrack
Secures Pound 1.5 Billion Funding Settlement and Details Final Quarter

British
Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott confirms that Railtrack will receive
a GBP1.5 billion advanced payment in return for increased accountability

helping to expand the network.
John
Prescott orders an urgent review of rail fare regulation following the
furor in the UK industry at the decision of Virgin Trains to increase
fares by almost 10% from May 21.
